One whiff of cinnamon can quickly transport us to cozy holiday gatherings where the spice is cooked into sweet treats and steeped in cider, but that warm fuzzy feeling it gives us is just one of cinnamon's best qualities.
The cinnamon we eat comes from the inner bark of trees native to south east Asia, but the scent we associate with cinnamon can also be extracted from the leaves of the tree. The essential oil extracted from the leaves has the same heating quality as cinnamon bark, but without the irritation of the natural aldehydes.
At one point in time, cinnamon was worth more than silver, and it was widely used as a sacred spice in Egypt and Rome. Fast forward to modern day and scientists are rediscovering the amazing health benefits it has by helping to regulate blood sugar. Ayurvedically speaking, cinnamon reduces both vata and kapha doshas and increases pitta dosha due to its superb warming qualities. The heat it brings to the body helps to kindle agni, our digestive fire. It is also excellent for supporting healthy circulation and in turn the heart, which brings us back to those warm fuzzy feelings . . .
