Spotlight on Vetiver

Vetiver essential oil is steam distilled from the roots of a tall tropical grass.  The resulting oil is woody, earthy, and musty with sweet undertones, much like the damp scent of the forest after it rains.  Traditionally, Vetiver grass was woven into shade roofs and fans; when wetted they would emit a pleasing, calming aroma that had the added benefit of repelling insects in places like India and Java.  Vetiver grass roots extend deep into the earth, providing erosion protection along river banks as well.  A plant's benefit to the body often mimics its function in nature; in India vetiver oil has been called the 'oil of tranquility' and indeed the essential oil has grounding properties that soothe anxiety and create a sense of calm and emotional stability.  Vetiver oil is deodorizing and is particularly beneficial to mature, oily, and irritated skin as it can improve circulation.  Aromatherapists have also used vetiver oil to help relieve muscle and joint pain or stiffness and as a tonic for the female hormonal system. All in all a very intriguing root oil!
